Evolution needs thousands of years before the genes adapt to new living conditions. Our productive capacity used to be limited according to the number of daylight hours available to us. In other words, our brains and bodies are genetically designed for a much simpler life. In genetic terms we have a stress system based on what used to be necessary for survival, namely "food + defence". Our body can therefore supply great amounts of adrenalin to maintain our physical performance. This energy is at the cost of other bodily functions – both the immune system and digestion are neglected at such times. This explains why we are often ill or have digestive complaints in stress situations. Our immune and digestive system is permanently undersupplied.
Resveratrol is enormously effective as an antioxidant, as it protects the following organs which are at particular risk from stress:
These organs are highly sensitive to oxidative stress and are therefore at particular risk from chronic stress. Resveratrol is a well-researched polyphenol
- which gets to the brain and protects sensitive nerve cells against free radicals. This reduces damage to the brain associated with ageing.
- protects the sensitive vessel walls of the coronary arteries against free radicals and therefore helps prevent dangerous heart diseases.
Some medical practitioners already call resveratrol the "life-prolonging substance" of the future!
Chlorophyll is a green leaf pigment which is one of the most important producers of energy on our planet and has been used for many years as an active ingredient in the medical field. The use of chlorophyll as an antioxidant, however, is an innovation. The biggest effects of chlorophyll are in the human organism, e.g.:
- powerful antioxidative properties
- stimulation of blood formation
- oxygen and energy supply
One of the main dangers of chronic stress is that it weakens the body's resistance. This increases the risk not just of colds but of other illnesses over the long terms as well, including cancer. Many recent studies have confirmed that chlorophyll has properties which contribute to the prevention of cancer.(„Heme and Chlorophyll Intake and Risk of Colorectal Cancer in the Netherlands Cohort Study“ Department Food and Chemical Risk Analysis, TNO Quality of Life, Zeist, the Netherlands…).
Green tea and its extracts contain a wide range of different antioxidants, which is reflected in an exceptionally high ORAC value. It has therefore had an integral place in Asian medicine for centuries.
Vitamin E is involved in practically all antioxidative defence mechanisms. Being fat soluble, it is especially important for the protection of the brain, since that is the organ with the highest concentration of fat.
Aloe vera as a booster
The bioavailability of nutrients such as vitamin E can be significantly enhanced by aloe vera. Researchers at the University of Scranton (USA) have shown that the bioavailability of vitamin E can be increased by 269% if aloe vera is taken at the same time.
Selenium is a key element in our antioxidative resistance. The important selenium-regulated enzymes can only function if supplied with sufficient selenium. These have a special protective effect against: Heart diseases, cancer and brain disorders (age-related brain disorders such as dementia, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease)
- Selenium-regulated enzymes in the brain can reduce oxidative stress and can also be of particular value in health terms in the early stages of these disorders. ("Selenoproteins and the aging brain." Mech Ageing Dev. 2010 Apr;131(4):253-60.)
- Selenium is absolutely indispensable for cell metabolism and is required for the activation of the thyroid hormones. ("Antioxidant intake and pancreatic cancer risk: The Vitamins and Lifestyle (VITAL) Study" in Cancer 2012 Dec 21. doi: 10.1002/cncr.27936.).
Poor nutritional habits, as often associated with stress, are especially likely to lead to a lack of sufficient selenium. Additional intake is therefore recommended for stress.
B vitamins (B1, B9, B12)
B vitamins work hand-in-hand together and are indispensable for the generation of energy in the brain in particular. Among other things they are responsible for:
- the conversion of glucose into nerve energy
- the synthesis of neurotransmitters (serotonin)
- the formation of red blood cells (B 9)
Given that they cannot be stored, with the exception of vitamin B 12, a regular supply is absolutely essential. If insufficient vitamins are supplied with the food intake because of a one-sided diet and not enough fruit, vegetables, milk and dairy products, the result is a vitamin B deficiency in the body. These deficiencies can lead to significant reductions in performance and concentration problems and therefore trigger a higher need for B vitamins under stress. An additional intake of B vitamins can be used in stress situations to maintain and strengthen mental performance.
Choline belongs to the group known as biogenic amines and is important for the metabolism of amino acids. As a nutrient it has an extremely positive effect on the brain and nerve cells. It penetrates directly into the brain cells and forms a chemical substance which supports memory functions.
Anyone having to cope with massive stress will have a high demand for choline to maintain the performance of their brain and nerves. Choline is present in a number of foodstuffs (egg yolks, liver, wheat germ), but in phases of extreme stress the amount of choline needed cannot be fully covered by the daily diet. Warning signs for choline deficiency can be:
- Sleep disorders
All our energy is generated in what are known as mitochondria. They are present in all cells and are the miniature power stations in our bodies. To be able to function and supply sufficient energy, they need the coenzyme Q10, a substance which is rich in vitamins and is produced by the body itself. Organs which consume large amounts of energy, such as the heart and brain, require more Q10 under stress. Moreover, the Q10 level of our cells starts to fall continuously once we reach the age of thirty. An increased intake of Q10 therefore makes sense for stress and older age. Recent studies have also highlighted the additional protective functions of coenzyme Q10 in relation to the sensitive blood vessels of the heart and brain. Additional coenzyme Q10 enables cells to supply more energy and therefore help increase or restore the level of performance in stress situations. Q10 not only assists with the production of energy, it also protects the sensitive cells against attack by free radicals.
Iron is the central atom in our red blood pigment and fundamental for the supply of oxygen and energy in the human body. Iron deficiency is one of the most common micronutrient deficiencies in the western world. ("Iron deficiency and anemia in female athletes-causes and risks" in Harefuah 2003 Oct142(10):698-703, 717.).
A lack of iron leads to fatigue and loss of vitality, with women particularly affected because of their loss of blood at regular intervals.
Iron – especially important for children
Iron – especially important for children Children need more iron for their growth than adults. For the development of the brain especially, and the development of cognitive skills, children need sufficient quantities of iron during the growth phase. Attention, memory, concentration, learning, recollection, creativity and orientation functions appear to develop more effectively if the body is supplied with sufficient iron.
The additional iron needed when performance requirements are higher is often beyond the means of the diet alone, making a supplementary intake of iron advisable in order to:
- enhance physical and mental performance,
- reduce the harm caused by oxidative stress.
The micronutrient L-carnitine promotes fatty acids in the mitochondria - these are the power stations in the cells of our bodies. It is therefore indispensable for energy metabolism. Moreover, L-carnitine is vitally important for the function of many of the body's organs, such as the heart, muscles, liver and immune cells.
These functions can be severely impaired in cases of carnitine deficiency, which in turn can lead to energy supply problems. L-carnitine is therefore an indispensable factor for staying fit and healthy.
